In the autumn of 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred. It was a confrontation between the USA, Soviet Union, and Cuba. The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred during the cold war (a.k.a. the nuclear war). In September the Soviet and Cuban government placed nuclear missiles in Cuba. The USA military discovered and they had to insure that the missiles were not sent. That is where I (John F. Kennedy) had to come in.
I saw the photographs of the missiles on October 16th and knew that is wasn’t a hoax. I had 5 choices to choose from. The five choices were, do nothing, use diplomatic pressure to get the Soviets to remove the missiles, an air attack on the missiles, a full military invasion, or the naval blockade of Cuba (a.k.a. quarantine). I choose quarantine. This would send ships to Cuba, but not attack.
The Cuban Missile Crisis officially ended on October 18th, 1962. The quarantine helped to end the crisis. I met with Soviet leaders and made an agreement for the Soviet to dismantle their missiles, and the USA would not invade. This meeting was what officially ended the crisis.
I want to stay humble but this was one of my greatest presidential accomplishments. I ended a crisis which could of lead to mass destruction non-violently. I believe that it is best to try to communicate non-violently. I wish I could have been in presidency longer so I could make more non-violent decisions.
Sincerely,
JFK
